My Favorite Jeans

Comfortable, polished, and surprisingly hard to find

Have you ever had a piece of clothing you'd happily wear every day?

Lands' End Women’s Starfish Denim High Rise Wide Leg Jeans with accessories.

I found mine at Lands’ End. The Women’s Starfish Denim High Rise Wide Leg Jeans may be the most comfortable item of clothing I’ve ever worn. They come in regular, petite, tall, and plus sizes, and in two different washes.

I liked them enough to go back and buy two more pairs.

They also manage something that’s not easy to find in stretch denim. They hold their shape. I haven’t had any issues with bagging at the knees or in the seat, even after hours of wear. That alone sets them apart.

They do lean casual. But while shopping with a client last week, I came across a similar pair at Talbots. The Trouser Pull-On Travel Jeans have a slightly more polished feel and could work easily in a workplace setting with a t-shirt or a blouse and a jacket.

An elevated career look that includes Talbots Travel Jeans.

What makes both of these jeans work is the balance they strike. They’re soft and easy to wear, but the wide leg and clean front keep them from feeling sloppy.

This is where many pull-on styles fall short. Without enough structure in the fabric or intention in the cut, they can drift into loungewear.

There’s also a perception that pull-on jeans aren’t “real” jeans, or that they somehow read as less put together. In many cases, that’s fair. When the fabric is too thin or the shape isn’t considered, they can look exactly like what they are. Comfortable, but not much else.

But when the cut is right and the fabric has enough substance, the result is something different. You get ease without giving up shape.

These do that.

What to Wear With Them

The key to styling a jean like this is balance. The waistband and fabric are relaxed, so what you pair with them can either reinforce that ease or bring in a bit more structure.

Easy and relaxed

A soft knit or slub tee with a simple sandal or sneaker. Comfortable, unfussy, and still pulled together.

Slightly polished

Anything with a bit of structure on top, such as a button-down, a crisp knit, or a clean neckline, adds just enough refinement. A flat, loafer, or simple shoe with shape helps support that feeling.

Light layering

A tank or shell with a lightweight cardigan or linen shirt worn open. This adds dimension without heaviness and works especially well in transitional weather.

A bit more elevated

A draped blouse paired with a more refined shoe and a touch of jewelry shifts the look entirely. The same jeans, just styled with a different intention.

It’s not always easy to find something that’s truly comfortable. Pieces that are comfortable and still thoughtfully shaped are even harder.

If you come across a pair like this, whether it’s these or something similar, it’s worth giving them a try.
